Why prioritising your mental health makes everything else easier

There’s something I’ve been reflecting on lately, both in my own life and in sessions with clients.
When life feels busy, expensive, or overwhelming, looking after your mental health is often one of the first things to fall down the priority list.
It makes sense.
You might be thinking:
Can I afford this right now?
Is it really necessary?
I’ll come back to it when things settle down
But what I see time and time again is this:
When your mental health improves, everything else becomes easier.
Mental health is the foundation
When you feel clearer and more regulated:
decision making improves
your energy is more consistent
relationships feel easier to navigate
work becomes more manageable
It’s not about adding something else to your plate.
It’s about strengthening the foundation that everything else is built on.
Why consistency matters
One of the biggest barriers to therapy that I see is inconsistency.
Clients might attend a session when things feel overwhelming, then stop once things feel slightly better.
But real, lasting change doesn’t come from occasional support.
It comes from regular and consistent engagement.
Often, this looks like:
weekly or fortnightly sessions to begin with
building momentum over time
creating space to actually implement change between appointments
It’s not just about cost
In the current climate, cost is a real consideration.
But in many cases, it’s not the only factor.
Sometimes it’s:
time
effort
uncertainty about what to expect
or not fully understanding the value of ongoing support
That’s why clarity matters.
Making it easier to prioritise your health
There are small things that can make a big difference:
booking your 6-10 initial sessions in advance
choosing times that realistically fit your week
using telehealth when needed (many of my clients use a work-break to attend via video chat to save on travel time)
keeping things simple and consistent
When the process is easy, it’s much more likely you’ll stay engaged.
A gentle reminder
You don’t have to wait until things feel overwhelming to get support.
And you don’t have to do it all at once.
But if something in your life feels harder than it needs to be, it might be worth asking:
What would feel different if I gave this more consistent attention?
