Life doesn't always unfold the way we expect.

At various points throughout life, we may find ourselves navigating significant change. Sometimes these transitions are planned and welcomed. At other times, they arrive unexpectedly, leaving us feeling uncertain, overwhelmed or unsure of who we are and what comes next.

You may be adjusting to becoming a parent, returning to work, changing careers, starting or growing a business, caring for ageing parents, navigating relationship changes, approaching an empty nest, moving through the physical and emotional changes that can accompany midlife, perimenopause or menopause, or simply questioning whether the life you've built still feels right for you.

Even positive changes can feel challenging.

Periods of transition often invite us to let go of familiar roles, routines and identities while stepping into something new. This can bring feelings of uncertainty, self-doubt, grief, anxiety, overwhelm, or a sense of feeling stuck between who you were and who you are becoming.

Many of the women I work with appear to be coping well on the outside. They continue showing up for work, family and the people around them. Yet underneath, they may be questioning what they want from this next chapter of life, struggling to adjust to change, or feeling disconnected from themselves and the life they have created.

Sometimes women have ticked many of the boxes they thought would bring happiness or fulfilment, only to find themselves wondering why they still feel unsettled, empty or unsure. This can be a powerful invitation to pause and consider whether the version of success they have been striving for is truly their own, or whether it has been shaped by family expectations, societal pressure, or what everyone else seemed to be doing.

Whilst every woman's circumstances are different, many are asking similar questions:

Who am I now?

What do I want?

What matters most to me?

What does success actually look like for me?

What do I want this next chapter of life to look and feel like?

Therapy provides a supportive space to explore these questions, make sense of change, and move forward with greater clarity, confidence and self-understanding.

Signs You May Be Struggling With a Life Transition

Life transitions can affect women in different ways. Sometimes the challenge isn't the change itself, but the uncertainty, self-doubt or loss of identity that can accompany it.

You may recognise some of the following:

  • Feeling uncertain about your future or what you want next

  • Questioning your career, relationships, lifestyle or sense of purpose

  • Feeling stuck between who you were and who you are becoming

  • Increased anxiety, stress or overwhelm during periods of change

  • Difficulty making decisions or trusting yourself

  • Feeling disconnected from yourself or the life you've created

  • Grieving a previous season of life, even when the change is positive

  • Struggling to adjust to changing family roles or responsibilities

  • Feeling lost after becoming a parent or returning to work

  • Navigating relationship changes, separation or divorce

  • Caring for ageing parents while balancing other responsibilities

  • Adjusting to the physical and emotional changes of perimenopause or menopause

  • Feeling like you've achieved many of the things you thought would make you happy, yet still feeling unfulfilled or disconnected

  • Questioning whether the life you've built is truly aligned with who you are and what matters most to you

  • Realising that the version of success you've been striving for may have been shaped by family expectations, societal pressures or other people's definitions of what life "should" look like

  • Wondering, "Is this really the life I want?"

  • Feeling like everyone else seems to have things figured out while you're trying to find your way

Life transitions often bring a mixture of emotions. It is possible to feel grateful for a new opportunity while also feeling overwhelmed, uncertain or sad about what has been left behind.

How Therapy Can Help

Therapy can provide a confidential space to slow down, reflect and make sense of what is happening during periods of change.

Together, we can explore the thoughts, emotions, beliefs and patterns that may be contributing to anxiety, overwhelm or uncertainty. This may include looking at the expectations you have been carrying, the roles you have grown used to fulfilling, and the ways you may have learned to define success, responsibility or self-worth.

Therapy can also help you reconnect with your values and begin creating your own definition of what a meaningful, fulfilling and aligned life looks like. For many women, this work is not about becoming someone completely different. It is often about reconnecting with parts of themselves that have been pushed aside, forgotten or quietened by years of responsibility, expectation and busyness.

My approach draws on evidence-based therapies including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). These approaches can help you better understand unhelpful thinking patterns, develop greater psychological flexibility, strengthen self-trust, clarify what matters most, and take meaningful action towards the life you want to create.

The goal is not to have everything figured out immediately. It is to create space to better understand yourself, make decisions with greater clarity, and move forward one step at a time.
